A Milestone for the Energy Transition

When Technology Becomes an Eye-Catcher

The district heating storage facility in Gelsenkirchen combines sustainable energy supply with a modern building envelope. With a storage capacity of approximately 30 million liters and a height of 50 meters, it is a landmark structure in the region. TA-Aluform® trapezoidal sheets with a high-performance PVDF coating were used for the facade cladding. The result is a building envelope that is permanently weather-resistant and visually appealing, meeting the high standards required of durable industrial architecture.

“The new district heating storage facility in Gelsenkirchen is visible even from a great distance. The structure is not only a key technical component of the heating transition, but also shapes the cityscape. We are all the more pleased to be able to contribute to this special building with durableTA-Aluform® trapezoidal sheets .”

When Technology Becomes an Icon

A structure has been built in Gelsenkirchen that catches the eye even from a great distance. Standing about 50 meters tall, 28 meters in diameter, and with a capacity of approximately 30 million liters of water, the new district heating storage facility plays a central role in the region’s transition to sustainable heating.

Due to its extraordinary dimensions, the storage facility is far more than just a technical structure. It shapes the cityscape of Gelsenkirchen and serves as a visible symbol of modern energy infrastructure. The requirements for the building envelope were correspondingly high. After all, a façade that shows signs of soiling, corrosion, or discoloration after just a few years would be clearly visible from a great distance given its size. This made it all the more important to find a solution that combines functionality, durability, and a consistently high-quality appearance.

façade, which combines protection and design

A total of approximately 5,300 m² of TA-Aluform® trapezoidal sheets and 800 m² of Aluminium flat sheets were used for the facade cladding.

The corrugated metal sheets serve several purposes at once. They provide lasting protection for the district heating storage tank against the elements while also defining its exterior appearance. Four contrasting-colored stripes give the tall façade a distinctive look, making the structure a striking landmark even from a great distance.

Especially for structures of this scale, the quality of the building envelope determines not only the technical service life but also the overall long-term impression.

Long-lasting surface quality

TA-Aluform® profiled sheets with a PVDF coating were used for the facade cladding. Choosing the right coating is crucial for a project like this, because maintenance and repair work on a district heating storage facility approximately 50 meters high should be kept to a minimum.

The PVDF coating reliably protects the façade from corrosion and the elements, ensuring that colour and its luster are preserved for many years to come. Especially for a structure that is visible even from a great distance, this plays a key role in maintaining a consistently high-quality appearance.
